A photographer's guide to the Faroe Islands

The Faroes are a photographer's archive. Here's how to work them.

The kit that earns its weight

A 24–70mm zoom and a 70–200mm cover almost everything. The 70–200 is the secret weapon — Faroese fog compresses beautifully through it. Add a wide (16–35mm) only if you specifically want the waterfall-at-cliff genre.

Carbon tripod, ND filters, plenty of cleaning cloths. The spray is constant.

How to read the weather

Wind speed is the most important number. Below 6 m/s opens long exposures. Visibility 8–20 km is the telephoto sweet spot. Humidity over 90% with low wind signals fog.
