Drone guide for the Faroe Islands

Drones reveal Faroese geometry. The rules matter as much as the wind.

The legal frame

The concrete visitor-facing limits: stay below 120 m, keep at least 150 m from villages, towns and main roads, and never fly within 5 km of Vágar Airport. Bird cliffs during nesting season (roughly April to August) are effectively off limits — Mykines above all — and several villages, Saksun among them, ask that drones stay away from houses and private land entirely.

Registration and permit mechanics change; check the current rules on visitfaroeislands.com before you travel rather than relying on year-old blog posts.

Reading the wind

Faroese wind accelerates dramatically near cliff edges. Coastal forecasts often understate ridgeline speeds by 40%. Fly within 60% of your drone's rated wind ceiling, not 100%.
